What’s On w/c 20th February

Can you believe we’re on the last full week of February already?! We have a busy week ahead of us both inside the centre and out–four of our staff will be manning a stand at Scottish Parliament on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday this week! Plenty happening at the centre as well, remember Cafe Tiki is open to the public Monday-Friday from 9am-3pm.

On Monday the lip reading class is back on this evening from 4pm-6pm with Jill Bradshaw. Lip reading is a valuable skill, particularly for people who are deaf, hard of hearing, or have audio processing disorder. If you’d like to learn more about this class get in touch.

Voices Off British Sign Language Class is on this evening from 6.30pm-7.30pm. This laidback BSL class is open to all, whether you would like to start learning or would just like to practice with others, our door is open. For more information on this class please contact Allan at allan.simpson@falkirk.gov.uk.

Also on this evening is our Talk and Sign Group, which meets from 7pm-9pm. We will be making and decorating pancakes! This group costs £2 and meets monthly for different social activities.

On Tuesday our Book Group will meet from 10am-11am to discuss their February book which is ‘Old Baggage’ by Lissa Evans. This group meets both in person and online in a Hybrid model. New participants welcome. We source our books from RNIB Talking Books and local library services. For March our book is The Echo by Minette Walters.

IT Classes are on as usual on Tuesday from 1pm-3pm, and 3pm-5pm, Thursday 1pm-3pm (this is a college class with no spaces at present), and Friday 1pm-3pm. These classes are for anyone who might want to learn more about computing, Tom can help with any IT queries, including accessibility around tablets and phones. Classes cost £5 per session.

Wednesday our BSL OAP will meet at their usual time from 12.30pm-2.30pm. This group is for deaf BSL speakers, and they love a bit of Bingo as well as a good old blether!

Also on Wednesday our Art Group will be on from 1.15pm-3.15pm. These sessions are led by art tutor, Val Martin, and cost £5 which covers materials and tutelage. As many of our group members have sight loss, many of the things we work on are tactile. There is an interpreter available for these sessions.

Slimming World also meet on Wednesday from 5pm-7pm, drop in is available. For more information on this group please contact Sandra on 07803 172441.

On Thursday we are hosting a tactile voting trial alongside RNIB on the Centre on Thursday, this will be happening across the day, invitiations are already out! Hopefully we will making another positive step forward towards accessible voting.

Thursday the Braille Class will return from 10.30am-12pm. This class is led by tutor Christine Moroney and runs weekly term time.

The FVSC Volunteer led Voices off class will meet from 11am-12.30pm. This group is open to anyone who would like to learn or practice British Sign Language. They will now be meeting weekly. There is no fee for this group.

The Macular Group meets at the centre from 1.30pm-3.30pm. This group is for people with Macular Degeneration and is host to talks, information sessions, and social activities. For more information on this group please contact Iona at 07517 543 998.

On Thursday Evening we will be hosting a Focus Group for the potential return of the Forth Valley Deaf Children’s Group from 6.30pm-7.30pm. This is for parents and children to help shape the look of the group going forward to guage the viability of the return of the group. Tea and coffee will be provided.

The braveheart group will be leaving for the usual walk from the sensory garden at 11.30am-12.30pm. This is a leisurely walk around the local area lasting approximately 45 minutes to an hour. Guides are available.

Our 7-12 year olds Youth Group will meet from 6pm-7.15pm this evening, this group does a range of different activities including games, crafts, baking and cooking, and much more! This week we will be making and decorating pancakes! If you are D/deaf or have sight loss or are the friend or family of someone with D/deafness or sight loss then this is the group for you!

The Deaf Club meets on Friday for their usual session from 7pm-10pm.
