Smoke Alarm Information

smoke alarm

We had our Centre User Group meeting this morning, and invited along Allan Simpson from the Sensory Services Team to speak with us about the law on smoke alarms which will change from February 2022.

If you don’t own your house the council or your landlord will be replacing the old smoke alarms with this new system that requires an additional smoke alarm in your most used room, a heat alarm, and a Carbon Monoxide alarm.

This new system needs to be linked, when one alarm goes off all of the alarms will go off. More information on the new law coming into effect can be found here: https://www.firescotland.gov.uk/your-safety/for-householders/fire-and-smoke-alarms-in-scottish-homes.aspx.

For home-owners there will be quite a high cost for replacing these devices, ranging from £150-£450 depending on house size, but they do come with a 10 year battery life. There is no need for an electrician to fit this system for you, it can be done by yourself if you feel confident enough.

New systems will need to be put into place for Deaf households, where normally light systems would alert you when an alarm or doorbell goes off. The Sensory Team at Falkirk Council will be able to help with this, please contact them direct for this, you can use Contact Scotland to assist with this. Contact information is below.

For additional support for people with Visual Impairment, or if you require assistance with alert systems for D/deaf people, you can contact the Sensory Team here at the centre who will do what they can to help. For more information you can contact Allan direct at allan.simpson@falkirk.gov.uk, or you can contact the Sensory Team by phoning 01324 590875.
