Volunteer Sighted Guides Needed

Two people. One has their hand on the shoulder of the sighted guide in front

We are looking for people to step forward and volunteer to become sighted guides for our blind Centre Users. We are looking for support on Monday and Friday as well as possible ad hoc events on other days. Full training will be given and no experience is necessary.

Knowledge of the Stirling area would be an advantage as you’ll be helping our minibus driver collect people from around Stirling and bringing them to the Centre for groups and activities. Duties include helping with navigation, assisting people on and off the bus and making sure people reach their destination safely.

You’ll also need to be an animal lover as you may well be working with Guide Dogs, we certainly have a few regular visitors in the Centre and you’ll need to enjoy a good chinwag, our Knit and Natter Group, one of those which currently needs support, is more famed for conversation than crochet.

Volunteer Coordinator Hannah Wilson commented:

“Volunteering is very rewarding. You get out, meet new people and get a real sense of wellbeing from it. Many studies have shown the positive impact that volunteering can have on physical and mental health.

“The role is quite flexible, we are currently looking for support with two groups, one on Monday which is our Knit and Natter group, very lively! And the second is our Friday IT class. Both need someone to help our driver bring people in from Stirling.

“It is just a few hours a week which could be covered by one or two people. We occasionally have ad hoc events too but there is no pressure to take on any task. We’ll provide all the training you need so if you are looking for experience to put on a CV, thinking about a career working with sensory people or just have a few hours a week to help those less fortunate, we’d love to hear from you.”

Forth Valley Sensory Centre has been supporting deaf, blind, hard of hearing and partially sighted people for the past 16 years and is proud to be a Volunteer Friendly organisation. The Centre could not exist without the support of volunteers who all bring their own unique skills to the charity. To register your interest, for this or any other possible volunteering role, contact Hannah on 01324 590 888, email hannahwilson@forthvalleysensorycentre.org or visit our volunteer page here. Please note all our volunteers undergo a PVG check before meeting Centre users.
