Forth Valley Sensory Centre board member, Terry Robinson is to ‘call the world’ this weekend on behalf of the Centre. He has been seeking sponsorship for his entry in this year’s CQ WW CW (Morse Code) amateur radio contest.
Participants have just 48 hours during the weekend of 26 – 27 November to establish two-way contact with as many stations throughout the world as possible on six frequency bands.
Terry will be taking part from his home in Glasgow, where he made over 3400 contacts in the same event in 2013. All money raised will be donated to the Sensory Centre.
This year, despite the likelihood of poorer broadcast conditions, Terry still hopes to break the 3000 contact barrier again. Terry now has a special call sign (MM0T) for use in major competitions, so that should increase interest amongst stations throughout the world.
Terry commented:
“The scoring for this event is quite complex, the number of contacts made is only loosely related to the final score. Contacts within Europe score 1 point, whilst those to other continents score 3. Apart from being divided into countries, the world is divided into 40 zones and it’s possible to contact each country and zone on each of the six bands. The final score is the number of points accrued through contacts, multiplied by the number of countries and zones contacted across all six bands.
“This year I have the extra incentive of raising money for Forth Valley Sensory Centre, a charity which does a lot of great work for visual and hearing impaired people throughout Falkirk, Stirling and Clackmannanshire.”
Terry, who is registered blind himself, is seeking sponsorship per contact, or per number of contacts (for example groups of 10). To add a bit of fun, sponsors are invited to guess Terry’s claimed final score with the closest receiving a prize of shopping vouchers.

Terry points out that past performance is no predictor of the future. Major equipment failure or other circumstances could abort the whole operation, giving a low or even null score.
