Sensory Summer for New Youth Group

Forth Valley Sensory Centre is to host a new Youth Group for young people, aged 10-18 with sight or hearing challenges this summer.

Featuring lots of different activities, including; a circus workshop, nature walk and potion making with Falkirk Community Trust, Cooking with Forth Environment Link, mural work on the Centre walls with artist Tragic O’Hara, garden games, weaving, and even ‘glass slumping’ with Blacknoir Decorative Glass – young people will learn how to cut glass and design their pieces of glass and they will be ‘slumped’ (super-heated until the glass almost melts into a mould to form a new shape) in a high fired kiln!

Running for six weeks, every Thursday and Friday from 1st July to 6th August, (11am – 2pm) the programme is being presented in partnership with Falkirk Community Learning and Development and is supported by funds from Fairer Falkirk, helping disadvantaged children in our community get the support they need.

Linsey Stocks, Groups and Activities Coordinator at Forth Valley Sensory Centre said:

“Our Friday Youth Group has started to pick up some more interested and this is the natural extension. Sensory conditions can be very isolating and in the school holidays, it isn’t as easy for these young people to meet up with friends or other likeminded people who share their challenges.

“With the help of Falkirk CLD and Fairer Falkirk we have put together a really engaging programme that will suit the youngest to the oldest. It will allow them to be creative, learn new skills and socialise in a safe environment here at the Centre.”

All attendees will also receive a healthy lunch courtesy of the Centre Café which carries the Healthy Living Award which is supported by Scottish Government and NHS Scotland.

Grace Cameron, Falkirk Community Learning and Development added:

“I’ve really enjoyed working with the Youth Club over the past couple of months and am really looking forward to joining them and other young people this summer.

“It’s really exciting being able to provide such a varied programme with the support of all our partners for young people who 100 percent need that face to face connection with their peers. I can’t wait to see all the learning opportunities and different things that the young people create.”

Spaces are strictly limited to ensure safe social distancing so if you are the parent or guardian of someone who you think would benefit from coming along, please contact Linsey at the Centre in the first instance on 01324 590 888 you can also use Contact Scotland for BSL queries, email sensory@forthvalleysensorycentre.org or get in touch via our Facebook and Twitter pages.
