Scotland’s Census 2022

The Census is something that affects all of us and can have a much bigger impact than you think. For example, Census information can have a direct effect on funding allocated to different areas. The Centre uses demographic information (information about the number of people who live in a certain area) which comes from the Census, to help us plan where we need to target our groups and activities.

The census is important. Everyone in the whole of Scotland must complete the census form or fill-in the census online.

The 2022 census is the first census we have had since 2011. You may remember the 2011 census.

The Scottish government asked questions about what kind of home (flat or house) you live in, whether you have any children

and if so how many, whether you are married or single, whether you work or attend college or are on an apprenticeship and so on.

This census will be very similar, but this one will ask you a new question to gather important information.

It will ask if you use BSL. If you are a BSL user it is important that you say YES to this question on your census return. It will also ask whether you use BSL at home.

If you do, you should also answer YES to this question. It is very important to do so.

You may receive your form in the post soon. You can fill it in straight away, but your answers must be about what your life is like on Sunday, the 20th of March.

If you are not sure how to fill in your census form and you would like some support, BDA Scotland have a BSL helpline. We are happy to support you and explain what you need to do.

A BSL video on the 2022 Census is available from the Scottish Government here.
