Happy World Braille Day!

Today, January 4th is the birthday of Louis Braille, inventor of the writing system for blind and visually impaired people which is named after him.

Braille has made a huge impact since it was it was formerly adopted in 1854 in France, two years after the death of its inventor. It took another 15 years or so before it cmae to the attention of the English speaking world but the use of Braille spread rapidly afterwards. World Braille Day recognises that impact and its place in the world today.

Even with the rise of electronic infomation through the internet, electronic books and other accessible devices, such as smartphones reading out email, there are still lots of people who learn and read Braille.

We offer a weekly class with an expert tutor and the feedback is always excellent. There are those who attend because Braille is a a hobby for them, because they want to learn a new skill or because interacting with the text means a more fulfilling reading experience than an electronic reading voice.

Whatever your reason, we’d be delighted to have you along. The group meets on a Thursday between 10am and 12pm so there is a great opportunity for a drink and a treat in the Cafe afterwards to get to know more.
