Book Group June 2022

Last week our Book Group met to discuss their June books; The Pearl by John Steinbeck, and Blue Above the Chimneys. Read on to see what they thought!

The Pearl, John Steinbeck, synopsis: The Pearl is Steinbeck’s heart-breaking short parable about wealth and the darkness and evil it can instil in even the most generous of men’s hearts.

Group thoughts: The group all loved the book and felt that it was beautifully written. The descriptions were really good and the moral of the story was quite poignant.

Story: 10/10

Narrator: 10/10

Blue Above the Chimneys, synopsis: An autobiographical tale by Christine Marion Fraser, this is the first of three novels which cover her life story. This book covers her life as a child, her carefree ways and how an illness changed the course of her life forever.

Group thoughts: The group also really enjoyed this book, they found that Christine’s story was a relatable one. The descriptions were good, and it was an interesting look at the social history captured in the novel. This book is part one of three so does seem to stop abruptly.

Story: 10/10

Narrator: 9/10.

The book group will take a break for July and reconvene on August 16th where we will be discussing Hunting Icarus by blind author Gordon Anthony who will be joining us as a special guest for this session!

Our books are sourced from RNIB talking books and local library services. This group meets in a hybrid online and in-person model on the third Tuesday of each month from 10am-11am.
