Welcome to Week Two of Bitesize Exercise with David! These are designed to build up each week as easy exercises at home for anyone with sensory loss!
David is an instructor with the Scottish Centre for Personal Safety and the cook here at the Forth Valley Sensory Centre. He is blind and has hearing loss so he is very careful to describe all his moves and make sure they are done as safely as possible.
We would urge anyone wanting to take part in David’s Bitesize Exercise to make sure they are safe though, clear a space and do not do push yourself unsafely. Also, please do the warm up before doing the actual exercises. We don’t want any strained muscles!
A few people asked why David has chosen to volunteer his time to do these Bitesize Exercise classes. He said:
“Exercise is very important. Not only for physical health but also mental health. Falkirk Health and Social Care Partnership Sensory Services team recently did a good video on the benefits of exercise while in lockdown and I thought, as someone who is blind and also has hearing loss, I would be a good person to show that exercise does not have to be difficult or need expensive equipment.
“For me, losing my sight at an early age left me very isolated for a long period. Exercise, starting various martial arts and hand to hand combat techniques gave me a focus. Under lockdown, with my hearing loss too, that isolation has returned as I cannot visit the Centre which I often refer to as my second home. I have a lot of friends and adopted family there so lockdown has been very hard.
“Doing these Bitesize Exercise classes gives me something to focus on, practise and develop each week and keeps me alert. It’s great to have a goal to aim for and producing these is mine. I hope you enjoy and lease, stay safe.”
