We are delighted to announce that pupils at Braes High have secured a £3000 grant for the Centre from the Youth and Philanthropy Initiative (YPI) after a competitive bidding process.
The group Katie, Simran, Paige, Sophie and Emily are all Year 3 pupils at Braes High and chose the Centre as their charity of choice.
That was the easy part. Competing against other groups and charities within the school, the girls had to put together a presentation which would be scored by a panel of independent judges from YPI.
Research was important so the students came into the Centre, met some of the partners, took a tour and watched our ‘Making Sense’ video. They also spoke with cook David Black about his work here at the Centre and dropped in to a Braille class with Christine who talked about the complexity of Braille and some of the alternatives like ‘Moon’ a system of symbol writing.
Presenting to five judges in front of a packed hall, each team had to state their case as to why their chosen charity should receive the funds.
After a nail biting time and some very stiff competition, it was announced that Katie, Simran, Paige, Sophie and Emily had scooped the award on behalf of the Centre!
Head teacher Mr Livingstone said Simran’s video was particularly effective at getting the story across.
Fundraising Co-ordinator Lynne Frail who attended on behalf of the Centre with Jill Hendry, one of our Centre Users said:
“I couldn’t have been more pleased or proud. They did a fantastic job and it was brilliant to know that all the hard work had paid off. Congratulations to all involved but a huge thank you to all the girls, Braes High and of course the Youth and Philanthropy Initiative.”
An official handover and award event will take place in Perth on 21st June and the Centre will be along to support our wonderful fundraising team!
