On World Sight Day, Thursday, 8th October 2020 Board member and all round top bloke Terry Robinson is set to walk 14 miles around Glasgow’s Queen’s Park to fundraise for our Centre!
Terry lives in Glasgow and will be turning 70 on 5th October, so what better way to celebrate than a walk in the park!
However, that is exactly what the challenge is unlikely to be, a simple walk in the park! This is no easy challenge. As he is blind, Terry has been mapping out the route in his head and will be doing this purely with the use of his long cane! Otherwise the walk will be entirely unaided with no guide or companions. Each lap of the park is 1.4 miles (see image) and Terry expects his 10 laps will take between four and five hours!
Not only that, Queen’s Park is one of the oldest settled areas in Glasgow with evidence of habitation dating back to prehistoric times. This is because the park, like many areas in Glasgow, includes several mounds of drumlin, or boulder clay left behind by melting glaciers in the last ice age. This also means as well as the 14 miles around the park, Terry will be climbing several hills, with his elevation rising and falling by around half a mile in the course of the walk.
Walking alone will be very tough. Terry says: “Not having a guide will mean this is very much a ‘zombie’ walk. I won’t have anyone to speak to or direct me so it is all memorized. I won’t be able to listen to a phone or have music on either as I will need my full concentration at all times. Even for an experienced blind walker, this is a real challenge not just physically but mentally.”
