Weekly updates are back! We hope that you’ve all had a lovely summer break, we’d love to say it was a break for us too but alas it’s been busy, busy, busy here as always! We had a few groups return last week, and this week we have even more so we are getting back in the swing of things.

On Monday Voices off will make its evening return from 6.30pm-7.30pm. This class is open to anyone who might like to learn some basic conversational British Sign Language, no prior experience required! If you’re interested in this class please contact Allan for more information at allan.simpson@forthvalleysensorycentre.org.

Also on Monday our Talk and Sign Group are heading to Kinghorn to try our paddle boarding! The group will be leaving the centre at 5.30pm and heading to Gordon from @paddleboardfife. We’ll be keeping you all updated with pictures of the evening, so keep an eye out on social media.

Tuesday sees the return of our book group. We will be meeting from 10am-11am in our usual hybrid format, we are also welcoming author Gordon Anthony as we discuss his book ‘Hunting Icarus’. The Book Group meets on the third Tuesday of the month, and our books are source from RNIB Talking Books and local library services. Our book for September is The Salt Path by Raynor Winn. If you are interested in joining our book group or you would like more information please get in touch.

The art group will also be making its return on Wednesday, we are doing a longer session this week as we are working on a sign project with Johnathan Elders from @CamelonArts. We will be designing signs for our garden areas which will then be laser cut and printed to go outside! Our Art group meets fortnightly and normally runs from 1.15pm-3.15pm, the group is led by art tutor Val Martin and costs £5 for the session which includes materials.

The BSL OAP group have been running throughout the summer and will also be in the centre on Wednesday from 12.30pm-2.30pm.This group meets weekly but will be taking a break on 31st August and return on the 7th September.

 The Thursday ‘Voices Off’ British Sign Language practice session also makes its return this week from 11am-12.30pm. This session is volunteer led by the wonderful Leona and Cathy. This laidback session meets fortnightly. Suitable for beginners and experts alike!

Our Youth Group is also back this Friday for it’s usual session from 6pm-7.15pm. This group engages in a range of different activities. From P7-S6, if you are D/deaf or have sight loss or are the friend or family of someone with D/deafness or sight loss then this is the group for you! This group will take a break on the 26th August and 2nd September due to staff holidays and return to their usual weekly sessions from 9th September.

The Gaming Group is also back on Friday evening from 7.30pm-8.30pm. Fraser from @TripleTapTech will be bringing along The Steam Deck, a handheld PC gaming device for us all to have a try at! We also have Nintendo Switch, Oculus VR headsets and tablets for all your gaming needs! This group is also open to P7-S6 students with a sight loss or D/deafness and their friends and siblings.

The Friday Deaf Club has also been running through the summer and will continue on this Friday for their usual session from 7pm-10pm.

A reminder as well that the Sensory Room is open to the public every day for one hour sessions, these cost £6 regardless of area travelled from.

Our Café and Sensory Garden are both also open to the public Monday-Friday. Cafe Tiki runs from 9am-3pm, and the Sensory Garden is open during office hours of 9am-5pm.
