Green Group Is All Go!

Our popular Green Group meetings, where people get together to discuss energy issues, climate change and top tips on saving energy is back with a bang.

Our special guest was Sandra Burt from Friends of the Earth who spoke about the huge problem of plastic pollution, especially in our oceans. The group was shown collections of ‘nurdles’ small plastic pieces which are used in manufacturing to make larger, plastic products. These small discs, around the size of a lentil, are often lost into our ecosystem. It is thought up to 53 billion of them enter the ocean from the UK each year.

Sandra spoke to the group, which included members of our Deaf community, about sustainable alternatives, such as pan scourers made from coconuts instead of plastic. Further ways to reduce waste, such as recycling bags, carrying a water bottle instead of buying or throwing away bottles and other local activities from Friends of the Earth were also discussed.

The group was organised by Sara Burns, Energy Redress Project Coordinator at Forth Valley Sensory Centre and will run each month on Wednesdays, 2:30pm-4pm

“huge thanks to Sandra for such an interesting talk. It is amazing just how much rubbish we throw away or resources we use unnecessarily. I will definitely be on the lookout for nurdles, next time I am at the coast and I’m sure we will all be looking for ways to be more environmentally friendly in the way we act.

“This was the first Green Group meeting in person for almost two years after Covid-19 restrictions but perfect timing with COP26 coming to Glasgow soon. I’m hoping that with the environment so high on the global agenda we will see more and more interest in this group over the coming months.”

Don’t forget, as well as the monthly group meetings, Sara also offers drop-in energy advice for people looking to cut their bills or reduce their energy consumption. This is also on Wednesday, weekly, 10am-1pm. No appointment necessary.
