Falkirk Community Trust Libraries has created a series of BSL story book videos, in a bid to share their love of books with as wide an audience as possible.
A team from the library service got together with British Sign Language interpreter, Linda Mackenzie, to create five short videos that each feature a rhyme and a reading of a beautiful, modern picture book.
The videos also include subtitles and are freely available on Falkirk Libraries’ You Tube channel so people can watch them as often as they like.
Here is just one of the books, “The Giant Who Snored”.
Tanya Milligan, Project Lead, said “We love picture books and we want every child to get a chance to share them with their family members. BSL and subtitling makes our new picture book videos as accessible as possible. “
The featured BSL story books are: ‘My Humongous Hamster’ by Lorna Freytag; ‘The Giant Who Snored’ by Mike Nicholson and Amy Lewis; ‘A Puppy’s Tale’ by Alan Windram and Chloe Holwill-Hunter, ‘Captain Crankie and Seadog Steve’ by Vivien French and Alison Bartlett; ‘Mac and Bob – the Party Problem’ by Alan Windram and Dave Sutton. The books are published by Little Door Books and Piccadilly Press, who have shown strong support for the project.

BSL storytimes are not the only videos created by the talented library team. Followers of their You Tube Channel can also see book recommendations and unboxings of new library stock. Falkirk Libraries’ videos build on the success of their Library Love podcast, which was the first regular podcast created by a UK public library. “Falkirk Community Trust Libraries are actively seeking to engage people through new technology” said Lesley O’Hare, Culture and Libraries Manager, “We already have a thriving social media presence and we see our videos and podcasts as new ways to share the joy of libraries”.
