Drop in advice sessions

Orange Question marks

As restrictions lift, our drop in advice sessions are back! We have three volunteers, Peter, John and Kyle ready to help you with a range of different issues.

Sessions are socially distanced and carried out in our Tech Hub, providing a comfortable, relaxed setting for conversations about daily issues and advice on accessible devices that might be able to help.

The sessions start from week of 14th September.

Each Tuesday, Peter McConnachie will be available between 12 and 2pm. Peter is a former RNIB staff member and is more of a specialist in sight loss and assistive items/technology.

Wednesday is John Ormsby from 10:30am to 12:30pm. John also has knowledge of sight loss, having a visual impairment himself, but has also got a good grounding in hearing loss, wearing hearing aids himself and being a former volunteer for Action on Hearing Loss (now, RNID).

Thursday is the turn of Kyle Somerville, who also has a sight impairment but is a ‘digital native’. A keen gamer, Kyle is able to help with questions on phones, digital media and other similar equipment. Kyle is in 1pm-3pm.

We know that the ability to just come by the Centre and get advice from peers on different gadgets, items and technology has been sadly missed so we are delighted that this service is back up and running.

Volunteer Coordinator Caroline Storey said:

“It is great to have this service back up and running. Information is impartial and often is based on real life situations, for example, putting special markers, known as ‘bump ons’ onto USB chargers so that you can feel which way up the cable needs to be put into a phone or other device.

“Simple steps that can make a big difference. Of course, Peter, John and Kyle are volunteers so their knowledge isn’t exhaustive but they will always do their best to help and if they can’t they will try to find someone who can!”

To ensure drop-ins are taking place (remember these are volunteers giving up their free time so cannot guarantee to be available every week) and avoid queues or disappointment, you can contact the Centre on 01324 590 888 to check availability. If one of our volunteers is busy, you can always relax with a brew or a snack in our Cafe!
