Deaf Curling at The Peak

We’ve had loads of great feedback from the Curling Group for blind and partially sighted people and now Deaf Curling has been added to the list.

The first Deaf Curling groups, with BSL support, start this week. We’ve previously advertised this but here’s a message from Scottish Curling Coach Helen Kallow about the latest sessions:

“I’m looking forward to our next BSL/Deaf-friendly Curling event at The Peak, Stirling on Saturday 23rd March from 2-4pm. Please bring £5 on the day. The interpreters for the event will be Donna Jewell & Jill Gallacher.

“Donna is also mentoring a student who will be present. We have a good mix of people who have never curled before and those who are experienced. The Coach will be Dougie Laird from Stirling. Due to a really good uptake in numbers, we have 3 sheets booked.

“There are 13 people booked so far, with some more still to confirm. This will allow for some people to do some practising and receive coaching as they want to and for the beginners to have some coaching and get confident at their own speed. We will then all join together for some games.”

Scottish Curling has produced a number od BSL videos to support Deaf Curling and give a guide to how the game is played. It is lots of fun and suitable for all, you can even play from a seat if needed.

You can access the videos here

Please wear warm clothes, jeans are not very suitable as they tend not to be very stretchy. Gloves and a hat are good to start off with, although you will warm up as you get going.

Please bring a clean pair of shoes with grips, such as trainers to change into so that no dirt gets onto the ice. Grippy over shoes will be provided. There is a café downstairs where everyone will meet, Helen will have a bright blue Scottish Curling jacket on.

For anyone interested in Curling for people with sight loss, you can get information on some of our recent sessions here.
