Deaf Awareness Week 2022

This week (2nd May 2022) is the annual Deaf Awareness Week, celebrating and raising the profile of deaf culture, challenges and people.

This year, the theme is ‘My Deaf Story’ and here, Linsey our Groups and Activities Coordinator tells you her story of growing up as a deaf person.

We have lots of groups and classes here for deaf and hard of hearing people, including our youth group and gaming group which Linsey leads. Many of the youngsters taking part have become more confident as deaf individuals and been motivated to try new things, including flying a plane!

Here, Linsey provides her thoughts on her school days, getting into the world of work and her advice on living with hearing loss or a hearing impairment.

There are around 50,0000 young people in the UK who are deaf as well as many more older people who could be deafened through accident, illness or industry or have a genetic condition which has resulted in deteriorating hearing. Of course we have those who are born profoundly deaf too as well as those of us who have lost out hearing as we age for any number of reasons.

No matter the cause, the Centre is here to offer help, support and advice through our groups, classes and activities. If you or someone you know could benefit from our work, get in touch!

You can also support us with a donation as be sure to follow us on social media including TikTok, Twitter and Facebook!
