Deaf Awareness Week 2021

This week, 4th – 9th May 2021 marks the annual Deaf Awareness Week where the challenges of day to day life for deaf and hard of hearing people appear in the mainstream media. read our top tips for helping people with hearing impairments below.

At Forth Valley Sensory Centre, we don’t need a special day to understand the challenges that being deaf or losing your hearing can bring, supporting people with these conditions is at our very core. However, we also work hard to improve understanding within the local community, especially with businesses and other third sector or public organisations. This fits in well with the Deaf Awareness Week 2021 theme “coming through it together”.

Our top tips for effective communication are:

  • If a customer does not look at you when you are speaking, they may be deaf, don’t panic, be patient.
  • Try to find another way to communicate with a person who has made it clear they can’t understand you.

Remember:

  • It’s not illegal to remove your mask, you won’t get in trouble.
Write things down for the customer.
  • Some people may have difficulty seeing, be prepared to write larger if asked.
Point to the amount on the till so the customer knows what to pay.
  • Maintain eye contact when speaking.
