Deaf Awareness Week 2020

Welcome to Deaf Awareness Week 2020! This week is an annual profile raiser for Deaf life and culture as well as helping make people more aware of their hearing and how to care for it.

We will have a number of different posts this week but the start of Deaf Awareness Week 2020 coincides with Star Wars Day - May the 4th!

So we have two videos for you, first a happy Deaf Awareness Week 2o20 video from all our staff and secondly, a Star Wars BSL Quiz which helped form party of the birthday celebrations for our Groups and Activities Coordinator Linsey. Deafened when she was just four, Linsey, who lip reads as well as wearing two hearing aids, has been sharing her experience on Twitter to help educate people about the challenges D/deaf people can face.

The Covid-19 Caris has caused issues for deaf and blind people too. Deaf people, especially lip readers are struggling with face masks, and general communication for BSL speakers is difficult at the best of times. Meanwhile, blind people are being asked to distance themselves from others without being able to see the distances. Many are unable to shop as they need help from supermarket staff and are no longer able to receive it. See our Coronavirus links here.

We will be adding a lip reading challenge from Linsey later in the week so keep an eye out for that!

Here are our two videos for now though!

May the Forth Valley Sensory Centre be with you!

Here's a lip reading challenge with Groups Coordinator Linsey too. How many can you get right?
