Our Bo’ness outreach group was initially formed six years ago to help local people with sight loss. Today, it helps all people with sensory loss, providing outings, talks and social events.
Nominally the group meets at St Catherine’s Church in Bo’ness but in reality, this is often just a pick up point for the Centre minibus as the group prefer to go out to different places rather than stay in one place.
The group recently enjoyed their Christmas Lunch at Bridge 49 near Linlithgow and it was a good chance to reflect on what the group means to those who come along.
The overriding theme was one of inclusion. Group member Derek commented, “What is great about this group is that we are just a bunch of likeminded people. Yes we all have sensory conditions but we don’t sit around complaining. This is a monthly escape and it is great to be out with others who understand the difficulties you can have when you are losing your sight.”
It is this chance to be out and doing something that many of the group members enjoy. Norma, who has been a member since the group began said, “If I wasn’t here I would probably just be sat in the house. I really enjoy getting out and doing the different activities which are always accessible for people like me who have lost their sight.”
The group meets on the last Wednesday at each month and each activity is individually priced.
New members are always welcome and a cheerful greeting is guaranteed. As Derek explains, “There is no need to discuss sight problems or different conditions but everyone here is comfortable discussing problems or giving advice and just knowing that can be a big comfort to many.”
