We had a good meeting on Monday 25th September with Forth Valley Police Division as Bryan and Mike gave us lots of great advice on scam avoidance and accessing Police and emergency services for people with sensory loss.
They also warned us about common scams, basic advice, if it walks like a duck and quacks like a duck… it’s a duck. Most scams rely on sneak tactics or basic brass neck to work. The current one is calling people and saying it is HMRC and that your tax has been under paid. You are then asked to buy iTunes vouchers and call back.
Let’s be clear, HMRC doesn’t deal in iTunes vouchers but, the worrying words “tax” “fine” “arrest” are what people focus on.
We’ll have some information on how to register your phone with 999 and make sure that you can access emergency services whenever you need to. There were also top tips on doorstep safety, for example registering a password with your utility supplier so you know that callers are genuine.
Bryan and Mike recommended the below video as a good example of how scams are changing due to modern technology and reminded everyone that they should never feel pressured into handing over money or personal details online or over the phone.
