Top mark at Halloween Quiz

Our recent Halloween Quiz, hosted by Captain ‘Joke’ Sparrow and his shipmate “First Mate Mary Queen of Pirates” aka Laura and Joe Cluxton, was a real blast! Raising £500 to support blind, partially sighted, deaf and hard of hearing people across Forth Valley.

We hoisted the mainsail on first indoor fundraising event for almost two years and despite numbers being strictly limited, there was much merriment above decks as our hosts hooked people in with a mix of great questions and humorous moments.

The quiz was split into two parts, each containing several rounds of questions with great titles like “which witch?”, playing on the Halloween and horror theme.

In between quiz rounds, there was a chance to win a Guide Dog plushie, the winning name being ‘Ziggy’, clearly inspired by canine singer David Bow-wowie. There was also a raffle with prizes donated by Centre Users and party games to close the event. This raised a further £50 for Laura’s Guide Dog appeal as she is trying to raise £2500 to train a Guide Dog puppy for another blind person.

The traditional ‘Mummy Wrap’ produced some amazing results while the ‘feely boxes’ created by volunteer Jenn and including names like ‘Tail of Squirrel’ and ‘Sheep’s Eyeballs’ were also a real scream.

Shiver our timbers if the eventual quiz winner wasn’t Cafe Assistant Tom and his sister whose knowledge of all things spooky was actually scary! Team Dunsmore won the Mummy wrap and there was a prize for best dressed as one participant came in full ‘Day of the Dead’ make-up!

Forth Valley Sensory Centre Fundraising and Publicity Manager, Martin Allen commented:

“It was brilliant to welcome people back for such a great event. The atmosphere was superb, carried along by our excellent hosts, Laura and Joe. The feedback from attendees was really positive with everyone saying what a great night they had. It was a very quick three hours packed with fun and games.

“Jenn’s Mocktails and feely boxes definitely had a few people squirming but it also helped highlight some of the issues people with sight loss face every day, especially surprise drinks or unexpected objects! So there was a serious aspect to the fun as well. It was a top evening though and an amazing amount raised.”

This concludes our events for the year but we hope to have much more on in the New Year.
