Even though lockdown restrictions are beginning to ease once more, it is prudent to note that current restrictions still create communication barriers for those of us who lip-read, have a hearing loss, or use BSL.
Alongside Jill Bradshaw, our lip-reading tutor, we have put together a list of some helpful tips for lip-readers, Deaf and Hard of Hearing people:
- You may find that some shop staff will wear a visor which makes it easier to understand than if wearing a mask, however these can mean voices are muffled and the visors become steamed up. These are not considered a safe alternative to wearing a mask.
- Try out different facemasks and face coverings to find ones that suit your needs. You will find that some are less prone to steaming up glasses or becoming tangled in hearing aids. There are also extenders available for masks to avoid this.
- Most people will accommodate you if you let them know you have a hearing loss and remove their mask to allow you to lip read. Maintain a safe distance whilst doing this. Some people may not want to remove their mask, in this situation it may be better to ask them to write things down.
- Carry a pen and pad with you in event you need to write anything down to communicate. Alternatively use a note app on your mobile phone.
- You can pick up a sunflower lanyard from your local Tesco or Sainsbury’s store. These lanyards let shop workers know that you need extra assistance.
- You can also purchase badges, cards, and wristbands that let people know you are Deaf, Hard of Hearing, or a lip-reader. These can be purchased here: https://www.hearinglink.org/
- All shops provide hand sanitiser at the door, you may want to also take your own small bottle with you wherever you go.
- Ask the checkout operator to show you the amount on the till.
- Where possible use contactless or card payments.
Remember that unless you tell someone that you are deaf, hard of hearing, or lip read then they won’t know to assist you.
